However, there are many professional financial advisers who believe in forming a long term relationship with their clients, ensuring they are looked after both now and in the future and ensuring they react to changes in their clients circumstances and changes in law which may have an impact. However, how do you find an adviser in your local area you can trust?

Common Sense Money is launching an IFA finder service within the next few weeks, which will provide access to good quality professional advisers across the UK. This service will be free to users of the site, and will ensure that you will be able to pick an adviser who specialised in your area of need, but review your circumstances holistically and build a relationship with you which will ensure you recieve best advice, not only now, but for years to come.

Understanding is the key.

Abraham Lincoln once said "give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I'll spend the first four hours sharpening the axe."

When it comes to managing your money, no phrase could better sum up the approach you should take. It's about understanding where you are financially, making sure you educate yourself with the options available to you, and looking at the options available to you in terms of any actions you need to take.

Many people 'jump in' when it comes to money matters, and find the water is too deep....the best thing to do is to learn to swim first. Shocking analogies aside, the principles are the same. Before you jump in ( make financial decisions ), learn to swim ( fully understand the decisions you are making )

However, Alexander Pope once said "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing". This is also true, and once equipped with the knowledge you have, you should seek independent advice from a specialist, who has both the knowledge and the experience to guide you through the choppy waters!! Think of your professional adviser as your financial swimming teacher!!
